ARCHITECTURE
AC Multi-Hop
415V / 480V 3-Phase AC
Grid AC → UPS (AC→DC→AC) → PDU → PSU (AC→DC) → VRM → chip. 4–5 conversions. 10–20% leakage.
800V HVDC
Single conversion at facility perimeter
Grid AC → rectifier (one conversion to 800V DC) → busway → DC-DC at rack → chip. Eliminates rack-level PSU. ~2–5% losses vs 10–20%.

LAYER 02
TRANSFORMERS
Magnetic Core
Passive electromagnetic induction
Heavy, slow, AC-only. Multiple step-down stages (HV → MV → LV). Passive, no digital control. Can’t do bidirectional flow.
Solid State Transformers (SST)
SiC / GaN high-frequency switching
30–50% smaller. Bidirectional DC flow. Digital control. Supports DER sell-back to grid. 150% more power through existing conductors.

STORAGE
VRLA UPS
Valve Regulated Lead Acid
10–20ms response. 200–500 cycles. 5–15min backup. Can’t handle sub-millisecond GPU power spikes (3× nominal draw in 1ms).
Supercapacitors + LFP BESS
Microsecond response + MWh-scale storage
Supercaps: <1ms response, 1M+ cycles, spike smoothing, demand charge mitigation. LFP BESS: 95%+ efficiency, peak shaving, grid demand response revenue.

RACK
DESIGN
PSU-Based AC Rack
10–50kW density, thick copper busbars
AC-to-DC PSU inside each rack. Up to 200kg copper busbars per rack. Dense cabling. Air-cooled at most. PSU fans consume significant power.
PSU-Free 800V DC Rack
900kW+ density, SiC/GaN DC-DC conversion
PSU eliminated → 60% more compute space per rack. High-temp steel enclosure. Seismic bracing. Liquid-cooled busbars. >98% efficient DC-DC conversion.

LAYER 05
COOLING
SYSTEM
Air + Chilled Water
CRAC units, ~15–20kW rack limit
Air cooling physically maxes out at ~20kW/rack. Chillers at ~$2M/MW, consume 15–20% of datacenter capex. Each deployment still feels “custom.”
Direct-to-Chip (D2C) Liquid
45°C inlet, no chillers required (Nvidia RA)
Cold plates on CPUs/GPUs. 45°C warm water eliminates chiller cost. Row-based CDUs integrate into rack. 20–30% cooling energy reduction. 13% of failures in 2024 from cooling.

MONITORING
& DCIM
Legacy DCIM
Static dashboards, manual workflows
Built for low-density static environments. Multi-vendor protocol fragmentation. Alert fatigue. No GPU-native telemetry. Can’t support lender collateral tracking.
GPU-Native Real-Time DCIM
Sub-second telemetry, API-first, lender-grade
Asset API normalizes across all vendors. Sub-second alerts. GPU wear telemetry for collateral underwriting. SaaS delivery. Maintenance graph tracks failure rates vs. run parameters.

Supply Chain Risk
SST READINESS
Solid State Transformers at pilot stage only
$115M market in 2025. Production MW-scale needed by 2027. New tech + new interactions with grid = unknown failure modes.
COOLING FRAGMENTATION
AMD still requires cold fluid + chillers
Nvidia 45°C warm water = no chiller. AMD cold water = chiller required. Heterogeneous GPU deployments face split cooling architecture.
GALLIUM DEPENDENCY
China controls ~80% of global gallium supply
GaN transistors in SSTs and DC-DC converters require gallium. Export restrictions already active in 2025 trade war.
SIMULTANEITY
All 6 layers must converge at once
Sequential upgrades impossible. Rubin Ultra ships 2027 — operators cannot phase infrastructure changes. Coordination failure = wasted capex.
04 · KEY ECONOMICS — THE NUMBERS THAT DRIVE DECISIONS
10–20%
AC Power Loss
Current AC multi-hop architecture loses 10–20% of all power consumed to conversion inefficiency. At 100MW facility, that’s 10–20MW wasted — enough to power a small town.
200kg
Copper per rack (current)
High-current AC busbars require up to 200kg of copper per rack. 800V DC halves current (P=IV), reducing copper ~45%. At 1,000 racks = ~90,000kg copper saved.
$2M/MW
Chiller cost (eliminated)
Chillers consume 15–20% of datacenter capex at ~$2M/MW. Nvidia’s 45°C warm-water D2C standard eliminates them entirely — a major opex and capex unlock.
13%
Failures from cooling (2024)
Uptime Institute: cooling caused 13% of all datacenter failures in 2024. CME/CyrusOne, Azure Western Europe, UNC Health all hit by cooling events. Biggest operational risk.
50×
Rack power increase 2017→2027
Volta at 20kW/rack in 2017 → Rubin Ultra at 1,000kW/rack in 2027. The infrastructure stack cannot pace this curve without the architectural overhaul described in Pt II.
$40M
1MW B300 cluster cost
Compute equipment alone for a 1MW Nvidia B300 HGX cluster runs ~$40M. Monitoring, maintenance, and collateral telemetry are no longer optional — they’re underwriting requirements.
$2.5–10K
per kWh — supercapacitors
10–50× more expensive than lithium-ion UPS per kWh, but they solve problems batteries physically cannot: sub-millisecond GPU spike smoothing and demand charge mitigation at scale.
80%
China gallium control
Gallium (required for GaN transistors in SSTs and DC-DC converters) is ~80% China-controlled. Export restrictions active in 2025 trade war. Critical mineral dependency in the power stack.
